Leaf House

Currently Under Construction

Bloomingdale, MI

Nestled into the undulating, heavily wooded landscape of southwest Michigan, the Leaf House seeks to become one with its environment.  The 10-acre site is covered by 5 acres of protected wetlands which hum with constantly changing wildlife.  The house is situated on the highest point of the property, setting up a stage on which to take in the surrounding natural beauty.  Programmatically, the building is designed to be an object that has been pushed and pulled as a product of the exterior forces of the site; wind, water and light.  The resulting form is a modest, one-story structure that seeks to maximize specific views and frame other, more subtle vignettes.  The materiality of the building supports this transparency, largely deferring to the rich tapestry of the natural environment.  Experientially, the house is both outside and inside, landscape and object, nature and other.
