AFZ + 3
Completed 2012
Designed & built in collaboration with Andrew J. Spatz Associates
AFZ+3 is a 5,550 sgft, 5-unit, mixed use, adaptive reuse project located in downtown Evanston. Constructed as a “ship in a bottle”, the second floor project was built while the two ground floor commercial units remained open for business. Formally, a “floating” second floor addition at the rear of the building allows for parking and secondary access at the ground level. Utilizing the existing front stair, the second floor plan is divided into three, two-bedroom, one bath units with two of the units facing onto the street and one facing the alley. Conceptually, the project strives to provide an alternative to typical cramped, high-density city living by providing a smaller building with generously proportioned spaces where residents can get to know one another.
