Cinema is a 20,000 sqft 12-unit, live/work adaptive reuse project. Originally the home of a film production firm, the existing structure, comprised of three separate masonry buildings constructed in the 1950’s, offered a mix of both steel and bowstring truss construction. The project aims to preserve the majority of the sturdy, boxy building shell while finding space to “color outside the lines” and add new dynamism and identity to the building. On the exterior, new aluminum architectural elements are placed strategically to break down the bulky scale of the existing building while communicating the change in use. The new curving and angular interior partitions seek to provide a counterpoint to the rigid, orthogonal structural components.
