Completed 2010

Designed & built in collaboration with Andrew J. Spatz Associates

shopSTUDIOS is a 5,600 sqft, 5-unit, live/work adaptive reuse project which explores concepts of transparency, privacy and repurposing.  Originally built as an automobile repair shop in the 1950’s, the existing masonry and bowstring truss structure provided an excellent starting point, featuring 48’ clear-spanned space and ceiling heights of up to 17’.  Modifications to the building were thought of in terms of architectural interventions, specific moments where changes in use necessitated a physical marker.  The main exterior intervention consists of a perforated aluminum “ribbon” that gives new identity to the street facing façade while wrapping around the south corner to provide entry and security to the access corridor that runs the length of the building.  Similar interventions are used at the building interiors which include large day-lit light wells, exposed HVAC ducting and perforated aluminum stairs and handrails.
