metalHOUSE 2 (MH-2)

Completed 2008

Designed & built in collaboration with Andrew J. Spatz Associates

The Spatz Residence is a 6,500 sqft single family home and architectural office that serves as a testing ground for new concepts and material explorations.  Designed and built in collaboration with the owner, the building explores a host of themes that run through the practice: sequence, compression, expansion, volume, framed views, spatial separation and material detailing.  The house is designed around a 30’ tall light well that brings natural light to the heart of the structure.  A porous, cantilevered stair runs through the light well connecting all three levels of the home and creating a luminous center around which the rest of the spaces mingle.  The interior material and color palette is restrained, letting the formal traits of the house, and light and shadow, take precedence.  A majority of the furniture throughout the residence is also custom-designed and built to maintain the seamless and singular nature of the project.
