School Street Residence
Completed 2006
Walpole, NH
Perched high above the Connecticut River Valley, the School Street Residence features panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and town below. The site was originally home to a livestock barn built in 1860, which, after determining it couldn’t be salvaged, provided the template for the historic New England vernacular from which the house draws. The structure serves as both a single-family home and an antique shop which is maintained by the owner. The front façade takes in sweeping views of the valley below while serving as a local landmark, resurrecting the “barn on the hill” aesthetic. The rear façade of the house is decidedly more private, with a raised slate patio and detached workshop helping to provide intimacy. The interior of the home breaks from the traditional language of the exterior and serves as a contemporary showroom for the client’s impressive collection of American folk art. A centrally located, open-riser stair allows light to penetrate to the middle of the plan helping to connect all three levels of the home.
